We learned about Nelson Mandela in class before christmas and this is a post on what I learned :D
Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in Africa. He grew up in Eastern Cape and went to a christian school. On his first day of school his teacher asked him what his name was and Nelson replied ‘ Rolihlahla’ then the teacher asked if he had another christian name and he replied ‘ No’ so the teacher gave him the name Nelson Mandela.
When Nelson was older he travelled to a different part of Africa and saw the horrible way the black people were being treated. In those days Black people weren’t allowed to work, vote or go near white people. Black people and White people weren’t allowed to marry each other either. Nelson fought against the goverment because, like many other people, he didn’t agree with the way these people were being treated.
Nelson was put in prison in 1962 for fighting against the goverment. While he was in jail his wife carried on with the protest and lots of other people fought against racial discrimination. Nelson Mandela was 72 when he was released in 1990 after spending 27 years in prison. He inspired people all around the world and became the first black president in South Africa in 1994. Even though he retired in 1999, he still continued to inspire people.
He died on December 5th 2013 at the age of 95.
