The 100 Word Challenge

1/18/2018

We are back doing 100 word challenges with both 5th and 6th class in our room. We are delighted that in our first week back writing in 2018 we have a showcase. Congratulations to Nicole and all the other great writers showcased in week 16. The prompt was a very apt prompt for the start of the new year...'In the beginning' and there were some excellent pieces written in our class. Thanks to Julia Skinner @TheHeadsOffice for facilitating the 100 word challenge @100word and for all her fantastic support for so many young writers.

You can read Nicole's great response to this week's prompt here

Entrepreneurship: Our Workshop with BizWorld.IE

12/30/2013

On the 11th and 12th of November we participated in a fantastic two day workshop with Nikki from BizWorld Ireland. We learned all about revenue and expenditure, how to form companies, the importance of merchandise and sales as well as shares and investments and how to get someone to invest in our business. We had a great two days and learned so much. We formed our own movie companies, decided on the jobs we would each do, produced a movie from each company, did the market research and designed posters and merchandise to attract our target audience – 3rd class. Here’s some photos from that busy time.
On our class blog we wrote about the two day workshop. Read what we learned here

'Out of my Mind' - Global Read Aloud Project

We have begun reading the book 'Out of my Mind' as part of the Global Read Aloud' initiative where classroom teachers all over the world read the same chapters of the book to their classes in a sequence decided in advance. We learned how to use Edmodo so that we could communicate with our partner schools and discuss what was happening in the book. Our teacher also participates regularly in google hangouts with our partner teachers from all over the world to discuss and organise our involvment in the Global Read Aloud project. 'Out of My MInd' is written by Sharon Draper and is about a girl called Melody who is eleven years old and has cerebral palsy. Although she is full of words and thoughts she has never been able to communicate those thoughts.
Read our first blog posts about Melody and why we now believe that we will think differently about people with disabilities as a result of hearing Melody's story.

Learning about Chinese Language and Culture

Learning about Chinese Language and Culture
In early October we were fortunate to be included on a programme to introduce Chinese language and culture into the classroom. Each Tuesday, Yuan Wen Feng visits our classroom for an hour and teaches us about her language and culture. Wen Feng comes from Shanghai in China but is based in the Confucious Centre in University College Cork. So far we have learned about Chinese characters, their origins, history and how they are formed, the tones used in speaking Chinese and their importance as well as numbers in Chinese. We have also practiced using chopsticks and have learned the manners associated with using chopsticks. We are looking forward to learning lots more from Yuan Wen Feng in the weeks ahead.

Our Class Blog on Kidblog.org
We have continued with our class blog which we began in 5h class and have taken part in a number of Global Projects with other classrooms around the world. The first of these included writing "7 Random Facts about Ourselves" You can read some of them here
http://kidblog.org/msokeeffesclass/tag/7-random-facts/
We have also continued with the 100 word challenge which has really improved our creative writing. Since we started back in September we have had soembody showcased from our class every week. One week there were 1041 entries from all over the world and that week we had four out of 37 showcases. Read some of our challenges here http://kidblog.org/msokeeffesclass/tag/100wc6th/
We also use our class blog for research. Teacher posts a webquest and we check out the sites she would like us to visit and learn from them. This year we can leave her a comment to tell her what we have learned and we also use the information to help us write blog posts on different subjects.

Our First Two Months in 6th Class

11/7/2013

We've had a hectic first two months in 6th class since we came back to school in September. We have been learning non stop and exploring many new and different ways to present our learning. One of the most popular of these is Padlet.com which is like a wall where all our information on any subject can be displayed. See some of our examples here http://kidblog.org/msokeeffesclass/tag/padlet/
Our teacher has also used Edcanvas when we were learning about Abraham Lincoln. This allows you to gather all your resources including video and documents as well as useful websites in one place for really easy access. Edcanvas recently changed to blendspaces. Here's our Abraham Lincoln edcanvas.
http://kidblog.org/msokeeffesclass/msokeeffesclass/edcanvas/

We began a class blog on kidblog.org at the start of fifth class and we are still using it now in 6th class. Since we came back to school in September, we have taken part in a number of Global Projects with other classrooms around the world which we have blogged about such as:

  • Writing "7 Random Facts about Ourselves" You can read some of them here http://kidblog.org/msokeeffesclass/tag/7-random-facts/
  • Japan: Hopes and Dreams Project. We participated in a Hopes and Dreams project where along with many of our global partner schools, we sent our hopes and dreams as well as our art work to Japan for inclusion in an art installation at a major arts festival there.
  • The 100 Word Challenge. We have also continued with the 100 word challenge which has really improved our creative writing. Since we started back in September we have had somebody showcased from our class every week. One week there were 1041 entries from all over the world and that week we had four out of 37 showcases! Read some of our challenges here  http://kidblog.org/msokeeffesclass/tag/100wc6th/
  • We also use our class blog for research. Teacher posts a webquest and we check out the sites she would like us to visit and learn from them. This year we can leave her a comment to tell her what we have learned and we also use the information to help us write blog posts on different subjects.
As well as our "regular" class work we have also embarked on a number of new ventures including learning about Chinese language and culture from our visiting Chinese teacher, Yuan Wen Feng. We have really enjoyed the first three classes with Wen Feng. We have made many new connections through our participation in the Global Read aloud project and via twitter and our class blog and we love connecting and receiving comments from all these classes all over the world.

Ms Murray's 1st class next door to us have begun their  blogging journey and they are taking part in the five sentence challenge. Before they type in their 5sc we have paired up with them to help them to edit their work. We have really enjoyed this. See their class blog here http://kidblog.org/MsMurraysClass2013/

We are looking forward to the next  seven weeks in school.
